In a quiet but meaningful event held on March 25, 2025, five individuals from the Iligan City Jail-Male Dormitory (ICJMD) reached an inspiring milestone by graduating from the jail-based Katatagan, Kalusugan at Damayan ng Komunidad (KKDK-PDL) program—a structured initiative aimed at rehabilitating persons deprived of liberty (PDL) with drug-related offenses.
Behind bars, where hope can often seem scarce, these PDL embraced the opportunity to reshape their lives. The KKDK-PDL program gave them the tools they needed to confront their struggles, build resilience, and prepare for reintegration into society.
The graduation ceremony, hosted within the confines of ICJMD, resonated with stories of redemption and second chances. Witnessing their clients’ progress, penology officers and facilitators commended the graduates for their determination to overcome adversity. The atmosphere was a mix of celebration, reflection, and optimism.
Designed as an intensive recovery program for incarcerated individuals, KKDK-PDL focuses on holistic growth and recovery, offering modules that address substance use dependency, mental well-being, and vital life skills. The initiative also encourages family involvement, fostering a supportive environment where relationships can mend alongside personal growth.
“The KKDK-PDL program is a chance for transformation even in the face of challenges,” remarked JO2 Walter W Mainit Jr, one of the facilitators. “We believe in the potential of every individual to turn their lives around, and this program is here to guide them through that process.”
City jail warden JCINSP CARMELO A CORSAME, a strong advocate for rehabilitation, expressed his pride in the program’s impact during the ceremony. “This moment is a testament to the resilience and potential of these individuals. Rehabilitation is at the heart of our mission, and we are committed to giving everyone a chance to rebuild their lives.”
Among the graduates was PDL Michael Angelo, whose journey exemplifies the transformative potential of the program. He shared his thoughts, saying, “The program has shown me that change is possible. I’ve learned to look beyond my past mistakes and work towards becoming a better person—for myself and for those I hold dear.”
The event served as a powerful reminder of the importance of providing support and opportunities for those seeking redemption. It underscored the belief that even within the walls of incarceration, hope can thrive and lives can change.
As these graduates move forward, the lessons they’ve learned will serve as a foundation for a brighter, more promising future.
