Eala: World No. 2.

GLOBE Ambassador Alex Eala’s spectacular run in the Juniors Tournament of the 2020 French Open in Paris, France, has catapulted her to number 2 in the latest Junior ITF World Rankings.

Eala’s number 2 spot is the highest ever accomplished by a Filipina tennis player in the history of the sport.

The 15-year-old tennis prodigy stood tall in Roland Garros by showing grit and determination despite playing more experienced opponents and coming from behind to win and advance in the semifinals.

We would like to congratulate Alex Eala on her remarkable achievement in the Roland Garros. We always believed that Alex is destined for success because of her passion, determination, and discipline to improve further. In these challenging times, Alex brings a bright spark of hope and inspiration for us Filipinos,” Ernest Cu, Globe President and CEO, said.

Eala’s run for a first-ever single Grand Slam title was cut short by eventual winner and local bet Else Jacquemont in the semis but not after garnering enough points to rise from number 4 to number 2 in the world rankings with 2148.75 points.

She trails Jacquemont by just 112.5 points for the top spot in the world.

The French Open Junior champion sits on top of the rankings with 2261.25 points.

Eala’s campaign in Roland Garros started with a straight-sets win over Natalia Szabann of Hungary, 6-4, 6-1.

She followed this up with a victory against Mara Guth of Germany, 6-1, 5-7, 6-4.

In the third round, Eala took out Leyre Romero of Spain, 6-1, 4-6, 6-1.

Eala bounced back from an opening set loss against Linda Noskova of the Czech Republic, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 to enter the semifinals.

Eala’s previous best in a Grand Slam singles event was a third-round appearance in the French Open last year.

Early this year, Eala won the 2020 Australian Open Juniors doubles title with Indonesian partner Priska Nugroho.

Eala is a scholar of the Rafa Nadal Academy in Mallorca, Spain, and has been a Globe Ambassador since 2013.
