Ecija condones penalties, interests on delinquent RPTs

PALAYAN CITY – The provincial treasurer’s office yesterday announced that it will not impose penalties and interests on delinquent taxpayers who have failed to pay their real property tax on time starting this year 2020 and back to the previous years.

Covered by the condonation of penalties and interests are only those from the province’s 27 municipalities, excluding the five component cities, said provincial treasurer Rosario Rivera.

Rivera added this condonation program by the provincial government is contained in Sangguniang Panlalawigan Ordinance No. 68-S-2020, in a bid to provide relief and also lessen the burden on the shoulders of Novo Ecijanos especially during this pandemic.

Under the SP ordinance, only the RPT’s principal amount shall be paid, and any accrued interest or penalties shall be waived or cancelled for those delinquent taxpayers having arrears that were accumulated from the previous years until 2020.

Rivera said Gov. Aurelio M. Umali and the SP led by his brother Vice Gov. Emmanuel Antonio Umali knew fully well the hardships being faced by fellow province-mates amid the pandemic that is why they took the initiative to devise ways and means to be able to somehow lessen the burden on the shoulders of every Novo Ecijano.

She added that this “one-time-tax-arrears-relief” program shall be effective from October 9, 2020 until November 30, 2021.

The PTO chief also said that the regular payment program for RPTs for the year 2021 will continue with 20 percent discount given to those advance payors while ten percent shall go to those who are availing of the prompt payment scheme.
