Ecija trader-mayoral bet nabbed for estafa

CABANATUAN City — Elements of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group in Nueva Ecija on Tuesday arrested for estafa charges a businessman who is a candidate for mayor in Talavera, Nueva Ecija.

Acting provincial police director Senior Supt. Leon Victor Z. Rosete identified the nabbed trader as subdivision developer Alfredo Libunao Jr., 52, alias Jojo, of District 1, Bgy. Calipahan, Talavera.

Libunao is challenging re-electionist Mayor Nerivi Santos-Martinez under the Partido Federal ng Pilipinas in next year’s midterm polls.

Also nabbed during the sting was Libunao’s companion, identified as Reson Angeles, 36, of District 3, Bgy. Calipahan, Talavera.

Rosete said the basis for the duo’s arrest by the CIDG was an arrest warrant for estafa issued by Judge Gonzalo P. Marata, of the Regional Trial Court Branch 48, Urdaneta City, on Feb. 10, 2015 with a recommended bail of P40,000.

He said the trader was also collared for another warrant for violation of RA 8282 under Criminal Case No. 12804 issued by acting RTC Judge Felizardo S. Montero of Branch 29 in Cabanatuan City on March 27, 2017 with a recommended bail of P24,000.

NE-CIDG head Supt. Reyson Bagain said their arrest was carried out during manhunt operations conducted by his men at the Old Capitol Compound on Burgos Avenue at 4:30 p.m.

Bagain said the arrested suspects were detained at the NE-CIDG custodial facility for proper disposition.
