Albeit the numerous impediments and challenges, it was a ‘remarkable’ year for the Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA), in so far as its general manager, Ed Monreal and his team are concerned.
Despite the challenges that came its way, the MIAA still managed to post positive growth rates in both business and operational aspects of its operations, with the aid of course, of his competent army led by public affairs office chief Connie Bungag, media affairs division chief Jess Martinez, NAIA terminal 3 manager Dante Basanta and action officer Danny Chua, among others.
For 2018, the MIAA’s gross revenues were up nine percent or P1.16 billion for a total of P14.11 billion. Of the latter amount, 1.71 billion went to the national government. The net income from operations went up 14 percent or P759 Million, for a total of P6.24 billion.
Monreal said the jump in revenues can be attributed to the overall increase in both flight and passenger movements brought about by the steady growth in international travel, as well as the swelling arrival of Chinese tourists ever since the government initiated the Visa Upon Arrival option at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA).
During the past year, the MIAA was also able to fund and complete seven major projects and programs benefitting all stakeholders.
The completed projects include: replacement of defective power cables from Substation Roadway 2 to Substation South Concourse at the NAIA Terminal 3. January 30, 2018; replacement of the conventional apron lighting and departure viaduct lighting to LED lighting at the NAIA Terminal 2 (project was completed on February 6, 2018); replacement of conventional lighting fixtures and lamps to LED lighting at the NAIA Terminal 3 (project completion date was on March 4, 2018); rehabilitation of powerhouse mimic board relay interlocking system which was completed on April 19, 2018; pgrading of the baggage conveyor belts at the NAIA Terminal 2 which was completed on May 31, 2018; replacement of nine passenger boarding bridges including the layout of new power feeder-line cables at the NAIA Terminal 1 which was finished on December 2, 2018; and ISO 9001-2015 Certification upgrade of MIAA’s Quality Management System to the new edition. The was completed on October 10, 2018.
The MIAA was also able to successfully implement and complete programs and projects at the NAIA, which were funded by the Department of Transportation (DOTr). The completed project is the construction of two additional Rapid-Exit Taxiways (RETs) at NAIA’s international runway 06/24. The project was implemented at a total cost of P311 million and was inaugurated on September 20, 2018 by Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea and DOTr Secretary Art Tugade.
Meanwhile, the following projects are at the pre-implementation stage: rehabilitation of the NAIA Terminal 1 Arrival Extension, improvement of the Greeter’s Area as well as Parking Area; replacement of air-conditioning chillers at the NAIA Terminal 2; and upgrading of paging system at NAIA Terminal 3. The total cost of these 3 projects is placed at P414 million.
Notwithstanding the completed projects, Monreal said the MIAA is also busy with the implementation of other projects and programs to improve the operations at the Manila airports.
Included in the ongoing projects are the following: detailed engineering design (DED) and construction management supervision (CMS) of the Repair and Upgrading of Taxiway Hotel (H-1), Charlie 1, Charlie 2, Charlie 3, Charlie 4, and Charlie 5 with the target date of completion for the entire project set in June 2022; the DED and CMS for the milling and paving of runway 06/24 (target date of completion is February 2020); overlay of Runway 06/24 with target completion date of February 2019 for the civil works portion and June 2019 for the electrical portion; DED and CMS of Runway 13/31 including interconnecting taxiway and repair and upgrading of runway 13 extension and H3 segment of runway 13/31 and construction of an additional holding position on Runway 13 (target completion date is set in May 2020) and lastly, the maintenance services for the Mitsubishi elevators, escalators, and moving walkways in NAIA 1, 2 and 3. Total cost of these five projects is P814 million to be charged against MIAA’s corporate operating budget.
One of the biggest projects implemented by the MIAA in 2018 is the rehabilitation of NAIA Terminal 2. Through funding from the DOTr, the P590 million rehabilitation project is expected to be completed by March 12, 2020.
