A tough decision

PERHAPS, some quarters may find it hard to understand why the government is out to reopen the economy despite the still rising number of COVID-19 cases in the country.

As President Rodrigo Duterte said, there’s that need to further ease restrictions to help the people recover from the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, notably those who lost their jobs.

People cannot forever be in the strict protocols. People are hungry, people have to work (and they have) to eat to survive,” said Duterte in a speech in Dumaguete City yesterday.

What is needed, he said, is for him to make a “tough decision” to enable the beleaguered Filipino people cope with the impact of the paralyzing COVID-19 pandemic.

The tough-talking Chief Executive said he would further relax quarantine measures in the country once the number of inoculated Filipinos reaches the one-million mark.

Likewise, President Duterte appealed for public cooperation if we are to contain the spread of the deadly disease, which continues to terrorize people across the globe.

With the people’s cooperation, he said, “I am confident that we will emerge as a strong nation.

Let’s observe health protocols, such as wearing masks and face shields, regular hand-washing and social distancing. Masks and face shields are sufficient gadgets to protect the people against COVID-19.

We, thus, urge everybody to join the nationwide campaign to defeat the pandemic.

It is a must!
