Congrats Rep. Romualdez; May EARIST ambush case be solved ASAP

First of all, congratulations to three-term Leyte Representative (1st District) Ferdinand Martin Gomez Romualdez for having reclaimed his seat in Congress with  much ease. His district is composed of Leyte’s seven towns and the capital city of Tacloban.

The work in Congress principally involves lawmaking and as such, the profile of Romualdez makes him ‘fit to a T.’ He is a brilliant lawyer and happens to be the president of the Philippine Constitution Association, otherwise known as the PHILCONSA.  He is also the national president of the Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats political party. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Government from Cornell University  and three years later, in 1988, a Certificate of Special Studies in Administration and Management from Harvard University.  In 1992,  he earned his Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of the Philippines.

Anyway, as of 1:53 p.m. yesterday, May 14, with 99.82 percent of election returns transmitted, the partial, unofficial results aggregated from Comelec data from 499 election returns covering Leyte’s first legislative district, Region 8, showed Romualdez with 157,382 votes as against his lone opponent Lino Dumas who got only  9,621 votes.

As I have confidently stated in my previous column, Romualdez was headed for and indeed got a sure and resounding victory, given the kind of service record that he and his entire family had been giving the Leytenos for the past decades or so.  His election once again is not only a victory to himself. Moreso, it is a huge victory for all the citizens of Leyte.

Again, congratulations to congressman -- or is it future House Speaker-  Romualdez.

My heart goes out to Editha Pillo, the 60-year-old president of the Eulogio Amang Rodriguez lnstitute of Science and Technology (EARIST) who was severely wounded during an ambush recently in Paco, Manila.

I watched with disgust as she cried a river, not knowing how such a thing could ever happen to someone as harmless as herself.

The comely woman also showed the wounds caused by bullets that hit her in the back and was apparently still shaken, even as the incident happened days ago.

Manila Police District (MPD) chief, P/Brig. General Vicente Danao, Jr. has ordered a thorough probe into the said ambush that took place last May 2 and which also injured Pillo’s companion Catalino Buenvenida, 52, chief of the motorpool services of EARIST, who sustained a gunshot wound in the arm.

As seen on CCTV, the gunman was a lone motorcycle-riding man who remains unidentified as of this writing. Police also theorize that the real target of the gunman was Buenvenida and not Pillo.
Witness Marlon Valdehueza, 48, a security guard of the Hybrid Watchman Security Agency, said the victims were on their way to the said school and had just boarded their vehicle, a white Toyota Fortuner with plate number BNN-5033 which was parked in the area, when the guman drove by at the driver’s side and fired at the victims.  He then sped toward Quirino Avenue, while the victims were rushed to the Manila Doctors’ Hospital.

I heard that Pillo remains traumatized and had taken a leave, specially since the gunman remains out there.

The fact that the failed ambush took place in broad daylight, at 6:56 a.m. and on a very busy area -- at the corner of Pedro Gil and Antonio Isip Streets in Paco -- is a big challenge to authorities. I hope this case gets solved soon.
