Imee a welcome addition to ‘girl power’ in Senate

January 22, 2019

THE looming entry of Ilocos Norte Governor Imee Marcos into the Senate, along with four others who are also expected to make it to the so-called ‘Magic 12,’ will be the culmination of ‘girl power’ in the Upper Chamber.

Add to this Imee’s political advertisement, shown repeatedly during breaks of the Pacquiao-Broner fight, where another prominent woman in the country, no less than President Rodrigo Duterte’s eldest daughter Sara, is  shown endorsing her.

If the recent senatorial surveys made by the Social Weather Station and Pulse Asia were to be the basis, it seems that Gov. Marcos is already assured of a seat in the Senate, along with reelectionits Grace Poe, Cynthia Villar and Nancy Binay, along with comebacking Senator Pia Cayetano.

Latest results released by the two survey firms showed all of the said women senatoriables clinching spots up to the tenth of the much-coveted ‘Magic 12.’

Should this be sustained, there will be seven lady lawmakers in the Senate when the 18th Congress opens. Presently, the Senate has six women members.

Unfortunately, the highly-competent and very smart Senator Loren Legarda is on her last term, while Senators Leila De Lima -- who remains in detention -- and  Risa Hontiveros will be serving up to June 30, 2022.

Although women will continue to be outnumbered by men, having the likes of the said women politicians sitting altogether in the Senate as a team will definitely be a force to reckon with.

As one voice, they will be able to push more effectively the enactment of measures that will address women’s needs, interests and general welfare, specially in keeping with the times.  This is not to discount the fact that some male senators are also sensitive to the needs of women and actively support anything that would benefit women.

Of the women senatoriables placing in the surveys, Marcos fared the best, considering that she is a virtual newbie in the said race. Not only does she have the support of the ‘solid north’ and Visayas but also has an impressive service record which, of course, is an entirely different story.

Based on her pronouncements,  the key programs and advocacies of Marcos are centered on providing much-needed support for the provinces and agriculture, stressing  this will pave the way for staple products most specially rice, to become cheaper and therefore more affordable to every Filipino.

Marcos also seeks to provide support to local government units in terms of evenly distributing seeds and fertilizers that would ensure good harvests for our farmers.

Going by her ad, Marcos is also expected to push for the suspension  of value added tax (VAT) and called for the setting  aside of politics and arguments, stressing that the people and the country should come first.

‘Dapat aksyon at solusyon agad,’ Marcos was seen saying in fluent, Visayan dialect. As for Sara Duterte, she tells viewers that, ‘sa bawat problema, “#ImeeSolusyon” (every problem, has a solution).’

Indeed, having the likes of Imee in the Senate will give  women a stronger representation and voice in the august chamber, judging by her reputation of being a go-getter and having the  strong personality and ‘brains’ to go with it.
