With its ‘party issue’ resolved, the Partido Demokratiko Pilipino Lakas ng Bayan or PDP-Laban is now totally focused on winning, come 2019 elections.
Ronwald ‘Ron’ Munsayac, chair of the party’s public information and communications committee, said that PDP-Laban President, Senator Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel III, welcomes the en banc resolution recently issued by the Commission on Elections (Comelec) declaring as the ‘legitimate’ wing of the ruling party, that which falls under the leadership of the good senator.
In a five-page resolution dated November 29, the Commission on Elections ruled that “the Sworn Information Update Statement SIUS) and List of Authorized Signatories filed by Senator Aquilino ‘Koko’ Pimentel III is the legitimate and official Sworn Information Update Statement and List of Authorized Signatories of PDP Laban for the May 13, 2019 national and local elections.”
In favoring Pimentel, Munsayac said the Comelec noted among others, that the list of officers from the senator’s group had already been previously recognized during the 2016 national elections and thus, the body had no reason to rule otherwise.
As the recognized legitimate set of officers, those from the Comelec-certified list can validly sign election-related documents such as Certificates of Nomination and Acceptance (CONA).
The Comelec also noted how the Statements of Contributions and Expenditures submitted after the 2016 polls was signed by the party treasurer from the group of Pimentel.
The election-related case stemmed from the submission of two sets of SIUS and CONA submitted by Pimentel and another group led by one Rogelio Garcia. Pimentel, who also happens to be a lawyer, categorized Garcia’s group as merely ‘rogue’ and ‘expelled’ elements claiming to be members of the party.
In welcoming the Comelec decision, Pimentel said: ‘The factual and legal bases for the Comelec resolution are very clear and leave no question that all along, we are the PDP-Laban and any other group that claims the same is illegitimate.”
Pimentel also expressed hope that those who attempt to appropriate the good and historic name of the PDP-Laban for their selfish political interests would exercise wisdom and magnanimity and accept the Comelec ruling, stressing that ‘there’s no need to confuse the public any longer.’
The senator from Mindanao said preparations for the 2019 elections are now in full swing and that the party is hoping for nothing less than a landslide win for administration bets for national and local posts for the May 13, 2019 elections.
‘We can already focus on 2019 and winning in the elections now that this confusing distraction has been resolved,’ he thus declared.
Now that the Come-lec has recognized the true leadership of PDP-Laban, this means that all nominations coming from the group of Garcia are now considered as both ‘illegitimate and unauthorized.’
‘Hence, they cannot be considered by the Comelec as PDP-Laban official candidates and they should also not present themselves to the electorate as such. If they continue to do so then they are deceiving the electorate,’ Pimentel emphatically stated.
Among those who filed their certificates of candidacy (CoCs) for the 2019 elections using ‘CONAs’ signed by the group of Garcia and now facing a big problem is singer-composer Freddie Aguilar, who formalized his bid for a Senate seat when he filed his CoC last October, while claiming to be running under the PDP-Laban banner.
Then and now, Pimentel had denied that the PDP-Laban ever issued a CONA for the long-haired singer. I wonder what happens to him now?
