With the COVID vaccines just around the bend, Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) general manager Ed Monreal joined other airport authorities in utilizing the time of the pandemic, when flights are scarce, to the fullest.
I’m referring to the newly-rehabilitated NAIA Terminal 2 extension runway which he said is expected to help decongest the ground and increase flight movements. Monreal said that following the swift completion of the project as preliminary improvements, it is expected that the NAIA’s maximum allowable commercial flight movement capacity will increase to ten more flight movements per hour, or a total of 240 commercial flight movements per day.
The rehabilitation plan is worth about P500 million. Initially completed in the repair and overlay of Runway 13/31 are the interconnecting taxiways as well as the 13/31 extension 2.258 meters, which also includes the repair of deteriorated asphalt pavement areas, asphalt overlaying works for the entire runway pavement and exit connections, painting of runway pavement markers and guidelines other related works for aircraft safe landing and take-off, repair and upgrading of deteriorated asphalt pavement connecting to Terminal 4 Apron and North & South Taxiway.
This effort earned the praises of airline companies, among them AirAsia which said the new runway paves the way for a better and more efficient distribution of the COVID-19 vaccine and supports the reopening of more tourist destinations in the near future.
The said airline company also said it considers the improvements on airport structures and facilities as essential developments to providing guests with efficient air travel and services. Pre-pandemic days, AirAsia heavily utilizes NAIA Terminal 4 and Runway 13/31 resulting in its commendable On Time Performance (OTP).
AirAsia’s CEO Ricky Isla said: “The completion of the upgrade of runway 13/31 is very timely and beneficial in facilitating better air traffic at NAIA as we gear up for the largest humanitarian effort of transporting COVID-19 vaccines. This will also aid domestic tourism as we increase our services to key summer destinations, expand connectivity across our islands, enhance networks, and provide greater opportunities for Filipinos, as we encourage our guests to rediscover the Philippines while promoting safe leisure travels.”
NAIA’s Runway 13/31 which services most of the domestic flights and short-haul aircraft such as the Airbus A320, was temporarily closed last year to give way to major rehabilitation and extension. The decline in the number of domestic and international flights due to the pandemic allowed the completion of the project ahead of the projected timeline. Good job!
