LIKE other well-meaning Filipinos, including the ordinary citizens across the country, we doff our hat to the 21 solons who attended last Monday’s special session of the House of Representatives.
Described by various quarters as the “Magnificent 21,” the district and party-list members of the House were led by Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano and Majority Leader (ML) Martin G. Romualdez.
And although they are undergoing the mandated 14-day self-quarantine, the said legislators continue to work from home to help President Duterte’s coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic fight.
Romualdez, chair of the House committee on rules, vowed to continue performing his duties as ML after ACT-CIS party-list Rep. Eric Go Yap admitted being tested positive for COVID-19.
Yap attended the House special session. He went to Malacanang last Saturday to help draft the contingency measure against COVID-19 as chairman of the powerful appropriations committee.
A lawyer like Cayetano, the workaholic Romualdez said that although he had no contact with Yap during the special session, “the most responsible thing for me to do…is to undergo self-quarantine.”
“This is a precautionary measure to avoid potential infection and the more prudent way of helping Duterte’s campaign to defeat COVID-19,” said Romualdez, husband of Tingog party-list Rep. Yedda Marie K. Romualdez.
Aside from Cayetano, Romualdez and Yap, the others who attended the House special session were Reps. Mike Defensor, LRay Villafuerte, Antonio Albano, Bienvenido Abante, Wilter “Sharky” Palma, Precious Castelo, Mikey Arroyo, France Castro, Janette Garin, Bong Suntay, Romeo Jalosjos Jr., Manny Lopez, Jonathan Sy-Alvarado, Abraham Tolentino, Francis Gerald Abaya, Raneo Abu, Robbie Puno and Dong Gonzales.
Doubtless, President Duterte, the “Magnificent 21” and the rest of the members of Congress deserved to be supported by the more than 100 million Filipinos as they chart the destiny of the people.
