MPD cop wounded in shootout, mystery surrounds suspect’s gun

December 12, 2019

A policeman from the Manila Police District (MPD) is now fighting for his life after taking four bulletwounds during a shooting encounter with holduppers in Sta. Cruz, Manila the other night.

If it’s any consolation, the two holduppers involved, said to be members of a notorious holdup gang, ended up dead after shooting it out with operatives from the Manila Police District-Station 3.

The two were identified as Rodel Vicente, 33, of No. 1555 Antipolo St., Sta. Cruz, Manila and  Antonio Yap, 45, of No. 649 Block 15, Baseco, Port Area, Manila.

The critically wounded cop who is now under observation after undergoing surgical operations is P/Corporal Edgil Bombase.  He sustained four gunshot wounds in the stomach.

P/Master Sergeant  Jansen Rey San Pedro, in his report to MPD-Homicide Section chief, P/Captain Henry Navarro,  said Bombase got wounded during successive shooting encounters that took place that night.

The first was at around 10:30 p.m. at the railroad tracks of the Philippine National Railways (PNR) at the corner of T. Mapua and Antipolo  Streets in Sta. Cruz,  Manila while the second encounter occurred at 11:20 p.m. in front of the Jose Reyes Memorial Medical Center (JRMMC) near the corner of Rizal Avenue and Quiricada Street, also in Sta. Cruz.

Operatives led by one P/Lieutenant Rowell Robles  were said to be roving the area as part of their routine duties when they  received information that a holdup incident was taking place in Blumentritt.

The same informant led them to the area on T. Mapua Street. After due verification by cops led by PCapt.Kherwin Evangelista, an operation was conducted.

As the cops were approaching, they were met by a volley of gunfire from suspects Vicente and Yap.  Unfortunately, P/Cpl. Bombase got hit in the exchange of gunfire and as he went down, so did suspect  Vicente. Yap on the other hand, managed to flee on foot toward the direction of Rizal Avenue.

A dragnet operation was thus laid out immediately so that operatives from the Alvarez Police Community Precinct (PCP) conducted ‘Oplan Sita’. Their interest was drawn to a man who later turned out to be Yap, since he was fidgety as he approached the checkpoint.

Yap, upon subsequent verification, was found to have been just released from the Manila City Jail in October this year, after having been jailed for a case of robbery.

As the police approached him, he fired at them, prompting the cops to fire back, hitting him fatally.  He was rushed by the same cops to the hospital to no avail.

Meantime, Bombase was operated on after the bullets he took damaged his stomach and liver. He and suspect Yap were brought to the same hospital, the JRMMC.

Apart from a beltbag that contained nine sachets of shabu and P130,000 cash, two cellphones, a tablet, 26 pieces of sex-enhancer drugs called ‘ecstasy,’ 400 pieces of silver jewelry, a weighing scale, several ammunition for a .45 cal. gun and a cal.22 revolver were said to have been found on Vicente.

Interesting in this case is that reportedly, several Land Transportation Office registration documents for motorcycles were also found on Yap, specifically official receipts and certificates of registration.

More than this, however, I guess really worth investigating are  unconfirmed reports —which I really, really hope are not true—surrounding the gun that was recovered by the police from suspect Vicente, said to be a cal. 9mm Glock with serial number 4920558.

As of this writing, unimpeachable sources said a verification is still said to be underway who used to own that firearm and how it ended up in the suspect’s hands. Hmmmm…..
