Ninoy Aquino International Airport GM Monreal awed by Luli Arroyo, issues reminders

Someone narrated to me how awed Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) General Manager Ed Monreal was, when he had a chance encounter with Luli Arroyo, daughter of former President, now House Speaker Gloria Macapagl-Arroyo.

According to the source, Monreal was doing the usual rounds at the NAIA Terminal 3 the other day when she noticed Luli seated in one of the gangchairs at the departure area, along with other ordinary passengers. She was waiting for her outbound international flight.

Monreal approached Luli -- who was devoid of any makeup and was just in ordinary clothes -- and asked if he could offer her any form of assistance that she might need. Luli stood up and politely told Monreal that everything was okay.

After that brief encounter, Monreal, I heard, was all praises for Luli, because of her humility and friendliness, even as she did not have bodyguards with her.

The source said Monreal was equally humble and courteous, not only for approaching Luli in the middle of his inspection but moreso, for addressing her as ‘Mam’ and going out of his way to check on her and using ‘po’ while talking to her even if she was much younger.            

Well, I remember two instances where I saw Luli arriving at the NAIA when her mother was still the President.  In fairness, she is consistent when it comes to thumbing down any special accommodation.

During the said two instances, Luli was just by herself, wearing T-shirt, jeans and what appeared like sandals or slippers. From the plane, she lined up at the immigration counter and then went straight to the conveyor to wait for her luggage which she also personally picked up.

There were about a couple of presidential security guards (PSG) present inside the airport but they were so far away from Luli and from what I heard, she did not even know they were there as she shunned having them around.

Speaking of GM Monreal,  I am using here a message he posted on social media, addressed to all passengers this Holy Week -- the number of which is expected to surge beginning this week -- to ensure that their travel will be hassle-free.                         

‘Unang-una po, kailangan po natin i-check ang mga flights natin. Meaning kung anong oras po tayo dapat nasa paliparan. General rule po, kailangan po at least three hours before your flight schedule ay nandito na po tayo sa paliparan at nagse-settle na po tayo. At kung tayo po ay papuntang international flight nasa proseso na po tayo ng CIQ, ibig sabihin Customs, Immigration, Quarantine.           

Pagkatapos po natin mag check-in, diretso na po tayo sa boarding gate para maghintay ng boarding announcement kung anong oras po ang ating departure, para hindi na po tayo hahanapin ng mga airlines na magre-resulta ng pagka-delay ng flights.

Reminders din po sa mga pasaherong mga umaalis, kailangan po i-check yung mga Liquid Aerosols and Gels (LAGs), mayroon po tayong mga panuntunan diyan na kailangan bawat isang container ay hindi lalagpas sa 100ml. Kapag iyon po ay lumagpas, iyon po ay kukumpiskahin ng ating mga screeners, ipapaiwan o hindi na po natin makukuha. Mas maganda po kung icheck natin maigi na dapat naka-separate containers po iyan o kaya nakabalot sa plastic bag para kapag sinabing ilabas ay mailalabas natin.

Pangatlong paalala lang po, kung may mga special handlings po tayo kagaya ng wheelchair, mga pasaherong medyo senior citizen, o nagre-require ng special assistance, pag nag-book na po tayo sa airlines, sabihin na po natin ang ating mga pangangailangan. Lalo na po yung mga papuntang abroad, isa po na kailangan nating mapaghandaan na mayroon po tayo, lalo na dito po sa Asian countries at sa lahat na rin po na pupuntahan natin -- ang minimum requirement po ng ating pasaporte ay kailangang minimum ng six months valid. Anything less than six months ay baka hindi po kayo pasakayin kasi pagdating po sa inyong mga paroroonan ay requirements iyon ng mga immigration.

Isa pa rin pong paalala, tayo po ay hindi naman po sa naghihigpit -- nandiyan na talaga iyan na ipinatutupad natin para sa seguridad ng mga pasahero sa ating paliparan. Ang hinihiling ko po sa lahat ng mga manlalakbay na tayo po ay magsubmit at mag-cooperate sa ating mga requirements para po mapangalagaan ang seguridad ng mga pasahero, lahat ng mga nanlalakbay pati po ang mga eroplano. ‘Yan po ay hindi natin ginagawa para pahirapan po kayo.  ‘Yan po ay tayo’y tumatalima sa mga procedures na pangangailangan para sa isang safe and secure na paglalakbay. Kaya tayo po ay dapat na makipag-correlate at cooperate sa ating mga security protocols dito sa ating paliparan. Thank you po -- Maraming Salamat.’
