Outburst understandable

March 09, 2019

DIRECTOR Guillermo Lorenzo T. Eleazar’s handling of a rogue policeman reminds us Filipinos that there’s a need to rid the Philippine National Police (PNP) of scalawags and other rotten eggs.

If not, these few misguided police officers and men will continue to tarnish the image of the entire police force, which is civilian in nature but national in scope, in the international community.

Knowing full well the continued presence of “rogue” lawmen, President Duterte said Eleazar did the right thing when he confronted Police Officer 2 Mario Quibete of the Eastern Police District (EPD).

“Sabihin mo kay (Director) Eleazar, okay iyon…Sabihin mo, I have his back covered,” Duterte told Secretary Eduardo Año of the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG).

Eleazar, a member of Class 1987 of the Philippine Military Academy (PMA), is chief of the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO).

Both Año, a former chief of staff of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), and PNP chief Director-General Oscar “Odie” D. Albayalde likewise backed Eleazar’s handling of Quibete.

The NCRPO director literally lost his temper after seeing the rogue policeman, raining expletives on him, but said “hindi ako magso-sorry sa mga tarantadong pulis.”

While Eleazar has already publicly apologized, Año said his outburst was understandable given the circumstances,” adding the action was a “manifestation of his frustration over erring cops.”

Albayalde, on the other hand, said: “Kung minsan talagang hindi mo maiwasan ‘yung outburst mo dahil sa sobrang galit. Pareho din ‘yan ng kung minsan napapalo natin ‘yung mga anak natin.”

Quibete was caught in the act of receiving P20,000 in marked money from the live-in partner of a confessed drug user in exchange for the dropping of criminal charges against him.

Highly-trained operatives of the NCRPO Regional Drug Enforcement Unit (RDDEU) arrested Quibete of the EPD Drug Enforcement Unit for a “bangketa/hulidap” operation.

President Duterte, Año, Albayalde and Eleazar deserve the all-out support of the Filipino people, including the ordinary citizens, as they go after the scalawags and misfits in the PNP.
