Cagayan de Oro City – The Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) continues its commitment to fostering transparency and building positive community relations by facilitating educational tours of its facilities. On September 26, 2024, ten students majoring in Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Liceo de Cagayan University participated in an educational visit to the Cagayan de Oro City Jail – Male Dormitory (CDOCJ-MD).
Headed by City Jail Warden JSUPT WILLIAM T MANENGYAO, DPA, the visit provided students with valuable insights into the operations of the BJMP, particularly focusing on jail management practices. This tour is an essential component of their internship program at the Oro Wellness Center, directed by Dr. Ryhselle Bernadette Melliza-Descallar, DM, RN, Head of CADAD-Oro Wellness Center. As part of their training, these students assist with client screening, counseling, and the implementation of community-based drug rehabilitation programs.

During the tour, the students had the opportunity to observe various aspects of jail operations and engage in discussions facilitated by Jail Officers. JINSP BRIT D AGUILON, the CRS Officer, along with Jail Officers JO1 Christaline Go and JO1 Grace Bansale, who serves as the Jail Psychometrician, led a session on the critical roles and responsibilities of Jail Psychometricians. They emphasized effective interaction strategies with Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDL), who may present a wide range of personalities and needs. The students also received an orientation on the facility’s layout, as well as an overview of the rules and regulations that govern within the jail.
This initiative underscores the BJMP’s dedication to supporting the education of future professionals and enhancing community understanding of the correctional system.
