Ang totoong unang Pilipinang Miss World

September 29, 2019

FORMER beauty queen-turned actress, public speaker, model  painter and former radio anchor Evangeline Pascual could have been the first Filipina Miss World in 1973 kung tinanggap lamang nito ang alok ng Miss World Organization para mag-take over sa crowned Miss World na si Marjorie Wallace who was stripped of the crown after 104 days dahil sa kanyang controversial affair with a very much married man, ang popular Welsch singer na si Tom Jones.

Evangeline placed 1st runner-up in 1973 Miss World competition na ginanap sa Royal Albert Hall ng  London, United Kingdom and she was only 17 years old then.

Dumating sa Pilipinas ang Miss World organizers to offer the crown to Evangeline pero nakapirma na siya  ng film contracts na hindi niya puwedeng atrasan.  The crown was offered to the 2nd runner up na si Patsy Yuen of Jamaica.

Since 17 pa lamang noon si Evangeline nang siya’y sumali sa Miss World competition in 1973, she was accompanied by her (late) father na si Dr. Francisco Pascual, Jr.  Ang kanyang ama rin ang tumanggi sa Miss World  crown ni Evangeline dahil sa film contracts na kanilang nilagdaan.

Evangeline was 18 nang siya’y maging leading lady ng movie king na si Fernando Poe, Jr. sa pelikulang “Mediavillo” in 1974 na sinundan ng iba pang action movies tulad ng “Game of Death” and “Dragon Force Connection” with the late Ramon Zamora, “Mission: Get the Mastermind” with Roberto Gonzales.  Naging kapareha rin siya ni Tony Ferrer sa “The Exit” in 1975 na sinundan ng “Golden Chaku” ni Rey Malonzo hanggang sa maging sunud-sunod na ang pagiging in-demand niyang leading-lady  in other movies.

Evangeline has been in showbiz for 45 years now. She has three married children sa kanyang nasirang husband na isang lawyer and polo player at meron na siyang apat na apo.

Since may kani-kanyang pamilya na at nasa ibang bansa ang tatlong anak ni Evangeline sa kanyang late husband, she lives alone with just a dog and a helper as company but she visits her 88-year-old mom in Orani, Bataan regularly.

She also accepts one-on-one training sa mga would-be beauty pageant candidates.
