DIRECTOR Mark Sicat de la Cruz is elated that the pilot of episode of “The Better Woman” is received well by viewers, as evidenced in the positive remarks they got in social media. He really feels blessed to be given the chance to direct Derek Ramsay and Andrea Torres in “The Better Woman”.
“I’ve worked with them before,” he says. “Si Derek in a movie noong assistant director pa lang ako ni Direk Andoy Ranay, ‘Trophy Wife’, and also in other soaps. Suwerte kong first soap niya sa GMA, ako'ng director. Parang kay Rayver Cruz din na nang lumipat sa GMA, ako rin ang first director sa ‘Asawa Ko, Karibal Ko’. Si Andrea naman, I directed her in TV shows na second unit director ako. Now, ako na 'yung main director.”
He graduated from UP with a course in filmmaking in 2006, with Antoinette Jadaone as his classmate, then he first worked with ABS-CBN before moving to GMA-7 who sent him to study directing at the Cinemalaya Film Workshops. “The Better Woman” is marketed as a hot sex drama. Isn’t he worried the MTRCB might be after him?
“Lahat ng ginagawa naming sexy scenes dito, pinapapanood ko sa mga pamangkin and they’re my gauge kung puwede ito sa TV o hindi. I make sure naman we don’t go beyond the guidelines, even sa language, kasi pan-TV ito, not a movie. Strict Parental Guidance ang rating namin.”
Do Andrea and Derek deliver in their respective roles? “Oh yes. Andrea is a thinking actress. I can see the margins of her script, puno ng notes niya kung paano magiging maayos ang trabaho niya sa bawat eksena. Dito, she plays dual roles as Jasmine and Juliet at talagang we make sure na magkaibang-magkaiba sila. Kasi si Jasmine as wife ni Derek, very tender sa lovemaking. Si Juliet naman, dahil pokpok, wild talaga. Si Derek naman, he follows all my instructions and we really collaborate, all of us, para mas mapaganda ang show. Hindi na nakapag-workshop dito sina Andrea at Derek dahil taping na agad, pero they quickly made a connection at makikita mo 'yung tindi ng chemistry nila.”
