Jasmine says she's no comparison to Anne

JASMINE Curtis Smith is ecstatic over the glowing reviews she received for her short but sweet appearance in “Sahaya” in its first two weeks. Everyone says she completely disappeared in the role of Manisan, a young Badjao maiden impregnated by a city boy and oppressed by her mother in law. Even her older sister, Anne Curtis, praised her and urged GMA to give a lead role next time. What’s her reaction to this?

“First of all, I want to thank all those who took time in posting on social media to praise my performance,” she says. “I was really overwhelmed by the good reviews and they’re all music to my ears. As always in any role I do, I just gave my 100 percent and I’m so glad viewers appreciate it. As for my Ate Anne, kinilig ako sa kanyang very sweet gesture and I want to thank her for always supporting me.”

How does her Ate Anne feel when people say that Jasmine is much better than her? “Hindi naman namin napag-uusapan 'yan. We always encourage each other kapag may napapanood kaming trabaho ng bawat isa na maganda ang execution. At saka, magkaiba naman kami. Hindi naman ako singer like her. Hindi ako nakakapuno ng concert sa Araneta, siya 'yun. Pinupuri niya talaga ako at ganun din naman ako sa kanya. Inaangat namin ang isa’t isa and we don’t treat it as a contest or competition.”

She’s glad to star in a new film, “Maledicto”, a horror movie, and it so happened she’s also doing two other horror flicks. We tell her she’s now the new Horror Queen. “Ay, ayoko ng ganyang title, ayokong ma-identify lang sa iisang genre,” she laughs. “Nataon lang, sunud-sunod nga ang horror na ginagawa ko. But I really like my role in ‘Maledicto’ as a nun, si Sister Barbara, who is assigned to help a young and arrogant priest, si Father Xavi as played by Tom Rodriguez, to exorcise Agnes, a student possessed by an evil spirit, played by Miles Ocampo. This is under the direction of Mark Meily. It’s really scary and we make it a point to pray sa set to make sure no bad spirits will harass us.”

She finds her role very challenging. “To begin with, it’s my first time to play the role of a nun. Very conservative siya at nababastusan siya kay Father Xavi na very modern ang views and unconventional ang ideas kaya, at one point, nasampal ko siya. Biro mo, madre, sinampal ang pari. Challenging din 'yung possession scenes na habang may rite of exorcism, nagliliparan ang mga plato and other objects sa paligid namin. ‘Maledicto’ opens in theaters on May 1st and I’m assuring lovers of horror flicks that it will give them a good scare.”
