A 52-year-old woman who went to the Manila Police District headquarters yesterday to file a complaint for theft ended up being arrested after she was identified by illegal recruitment victims as the one who allegedly duped them.
Police said slated for inquest at the Manila Prosecutor’s Office was suspect Editha Montero Bacani-Betguen alias ‘Editha Montero de Guzman’ and ‘Fatima de Guzman’, of No. 3F, Matulungin St., Barangay Central, Quezon City. The suspect was facing charges of estafa and large-scale illegal recruitment lodged against her by 12 female prospective overseas workers.
It was learned that Montero went to the MPD-theft and robbery section at around 11:30 a.m. to file a case of theft against a gay acquaintance whom she accused of having stolen her bag and jewelry.
However, while at the MPD, Montero was seen by her alleged victims who were at the MPD-General Assignment Section to file a complaint against her, after they allegedly failed to leave for Saudi Arabia either on April 30 or May 15, as promised by the suspect. The alleged victims claimed that the suspect no longer showed up after taking their money.
The complainants said the suspect promised them to work in Qatar as waitresses.
