Ex-FEU standout to reinforce Perlas

MIDDLE blocker Cza Carandang will bring her swag to the Perlas Spikers to boost their frontline in the PVL.

The now pro league’s only independent club on Wednesday night announced through its social media the acquisition of the 5-foot-7 Carandang to give the team a third option in the middle after Cherry Nunag and Kathy Bersola.

A former Far Eastern University standout, Carandang’s previous club stint was with PLDT under coach Roger Gorayeb.

By joining Perlas, Carandang has reunited with her former college teammates Heather Guino-o and Gel Cayuna, as well as the club’s head coach Rei Diaz, who is one of FEU women’s volleyball team’s assistant coaches.

Last month, Nunag joined the Perlas Spikers after her contract with PetroGazz expired on Dec. 31.

The Perlas Spikers have also bolstered the libero position by getting former Adamson stalwarts Jellie Tempiatura and Thang Ponce.

Aside from Bersola, open spiker Nicole Tiamzon, opposite hitter Sue Roces and veteran setter Jem Ferrer were among the holdovers from Perlas’ 2019 roster. The four were also the remaining players from the Perlas Spikers’ inaugural season in 2017, the year the PVL was born.

With the Perlas roster already taking shape, team manager Rye Sordan is looking forward for his club to plunge into face-to-face training as they prepare for the season-opening Open Conference.

The Games and Amusements Board, which the PVL is now under supervision and regulation, on Tuesday has cleared Ronac Gym in Shaw Blvd., Mandaluyong as a training venue for the restart.

Hoping the LGU approval will be given soon. I think that’s the last step para we can resume. Plus minor changes sa procedures/protocols from the inspection. But good that GAB was very thorough with the inspection,” Sordan posted on his Twitter account with three thumbs up emojis.
