Ex-PDEA exec nabbed over Cebu lawyer’s death

A FORMER official of the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) was arrested over the death of lawyer Joey Luis Wee in Cebu City last November 2020.

The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI)-Central Visayas said retired Army colonel Edwin Layese, former director of PDEA Region 6, was arrested on January 13.

Layese was accused of “supervising” the slay of Wee last November 23.

NBI-7 Director Renan Oliva, however, clarified that Layese was not the mastermind, but was hired to plan and execute the ambush.

Oliva added that Layese was also involved in the attack on another Cebu lawyer, James Joseph Gupana, last October.

Gupana survived.

Wee, 51, was shot dead in Bgy. Kasambagan, Cebu City. He died while undergoing treatment in a nearby hospital due to gunshot wounds.

Initial investigation showed Wee was shot in front of his office along J. Panis Street, Bgy. Kasambagan.

Recently, the Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP) Cebu City Chapter has called on authorities to expedite their investigation into the murder of Wee.

“The brazen attack on our brother in the legal profession is taken as an attack on the whole legal community,” read a portion of IBP Cebu City Chapter’s statement.
