Facial recognition, barcode system to be in place by 2023 – GM Chiong

Cesar Chiong

THE Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) is planning to use by 2023, the installled facial recognition cameras at the premier Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) terminals.

It was learned that MIAA General Manager Cesar Chiong is already coordinating with the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) and other pertinent agencies, regarding the matter.

With the said system in place, which will also be using barcodes, individuals who are ‘wanted’ by law will also be recognized.

Chiong said the utilization of the said new system is significant in the wake of the removal of the ‘initial security screening’ at the departure area of the NAIA Terminal 1, whose dryrun was made on December 1, 2022.

With the facial recognition camera and barcode systems in place, Chiong said that those attempting to sneak into the airport using fake identification cards will be stopped in their tracks.

Prior to this, Chiong had ordered a thorough investigation into the recent reported human trafficking scheme where three Filipinos were able to leave for Myanmar without having to pass through normal immigration processes.

The said ‘victims’ were reportedly able to gain access to the boarding gates using fake access passes in the guise of being employees of airport concessionaires.

Chiong vowed definitive action on the matter saying there is no room for such irregularities in the airport and that whoever may be found responsible will be charged accordingly.
