Fake BIR exec held for P25K extortion

OPERATIVES from the Manila Police District-Special Mayor’s Reaction Team (SMART) arrested a 68-year-old man said to be posing as an enforcement officer of the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR), when he reportedly tried to mulct P25,000 from a businessman in exchange for a BIR Clearance Certification in Binondo, Manila.

SMART chief Maj. Jhun Ibay said the supect, identified as Vicente Alberto, of 234-D, 5th Avenue, Grace Park, Caloocan City, was charged with usurpation of authority, falsification by a private individual and use of falsified documents and estafa/swindling before the Manila Prosecutor’s Office.

Ibay said a team led by P/Major Cicero Pura nabbed Alberto who was found in possession of a fake BIR ID stating that his position is Revenue Enforcement Officer III, along with a fake mission order and clearance also from the BIR.

The arrest stemmed from a complaint lodged by a certain Adonis Tan, 57, a businessman and owner of PENCO Incorporated located on 474 Elcano St., San Nicolas, Binondo.

The victim told the police that the suspect visited his establishment and introduced himself as a BIR revenue officer. The suspect looked for his BIR Clearance Certification and when he failed to present any, the suspect allegedly asked for P25,000 supposedly in exchange for such certification.

Unknown to the suspect, the victim lodged a complaint at SMART which laid out an entrapment operation.

Ibay said the documents seized from the suspect were proven to be fake.
