Farmers, fishers assured of aid

THE Department of Agriculture (DA) has assured farmers and fisherfolk of government assistance as it readied the release of P400 million for the rehabilitation of areas badly affected by strong typhoon “Rolly.”

Aside from the rehab fund, total of 133,326 bags of rice seeds and 17,545 bags of corn seeds are ready for distribution while 1980 kilograms of assorted vegetables were immediately made available for dispatch.

The government has yet to come up with the total damage from Rolly’s fury.

Drugs and biologics will be distributed to the livestock and poultry sector.

The DA also reminded the affected farmers and others from the agriculture sector they can apply for indemnification from the Philippine Crop Insurance Corporation (PCIC) for the losses they incurred from Rolly’s wrath.

The agriculture sector has suffered direct hits from recent weather disturbances Pepito, Quinta and Rolly and is bracing for tropical storm Siony which entered the Philippine area of responsibility yesterday morning and may make landfall in the country.
