FEU chess classes underway

Far Eastern University

THE Far Eastern University Online Youth Chess Lessons, a four-part free chess clinic via Zoom, formally started Sept.12 with about 30 registered participants.

A project of FEU Chairman Aurelio Montinola III and FEU Athletics Director Mark Oliver Molina, the online chess classes are aimed at discovering more young and outstanding players who can someday represent the country in international competitions.

“This is part of FEU’s program to help young players to learn chess and achieve their dreams of becoming a grandmaster who could represent the country in major international events,” said FEU head coach GM Jayson Gonzales.

Gonzales, also the founding president of the Philippine Academy for Chess Excellence (PACE), thanked both Montinola and Molina for their support to this grassroot development chess program.

“This maiden chess program is made possible with the support from FEU Chairman Aurelio Montinola III, who is also a chess player during his high school years. He even founded a chess club in Ateneo,” said Gonzales.

Among the noted players who have volunteered to be part of the undertaking are WGM Janelle Mae Frayna, Michelle Yaon, IM Paolo Bersamina and IM Jerad Docena.

The chess classes, which will be also behld on Oct. 10, Nov. 7 and Dec. 5, are open to players from all over the country with age from 11 to 17 years old.

Both boys and girls are allowed to participate.
