Ghost of Tsushima: How Feudal Japan Turned into a Global Success

Ghost of Tsushima

Ghost of Tsushima by developer Sucker Punch takes players to 13th-century Feudal Japan and lets players explore a world from Japanese history, that is only seldom depicted within games. It was published by Sony Interactive Entertainment in July 2020 on PS4 and PC and has taken the world by storm with its stunning visuals, stellar samurai action, and immersive narrative. Ghost of Tsushima has gained widespread critical acclaim, has received numerous awards, and remains one of Sony’s best-selling games. With the recently released PS5 expansion Ghost of Tsushima: Director’s Cut, a new crossover with a popular party game, and a movie adaptation in the works, the saga of the fearless samurai Jin Sakai continues.

Ghost of Tsushima is one of Sony’s best-selling titles

According to Sony’s recent financial report, Ghost of Tsushima is still going strong. While God of War tops the list with more than 19.5 million sold copies, Ghost of Tsushima holds its own with over 6.5 million sold units, making it one of Sony’s most successful first-party titles. The samurai adventure game continues to draw players in, with Sucker Punch continuously bringing out updates to improve the players’ experience.

While the original game was released for PS4 and PC, they launched an update for PS4 and PS5 last August: Ghost of Tsushima: Director’s Cut brought an array of improvements, making use of the PS5’s powerful specs, and also introduced completely new content and PS5 exclusive features. The island expansion is one of the biggest additions, which lets players explore the neighboring island Iki, bringing with it an entirely new chapter in Jin’s adventures. The new update also introduced Japanese lip-sync, making for an even more immersive experience for Japanese players. The new edition found critical acclaim, and the new Iki island even scored the Best Game Expansion award at the Golden Joystick Awards 2021.

Crossover with Fall Guys and a movie in the works

While the game and its expansion alone are already making waves in the gaming industry, Ghost of Tsushima is set on expanding its reach even further. As recently revealed, Sucker Punch’s samurai title is now cooperating with Mediatonic’s massively multiplayer party game Fall Guys. The new crossover will bring two costumes based on Ghost of Tsushima into the party game for players to dress up as Jin or the Ghost while battling the opponents in the hit battle royale game. Since its release in February 2020, Fall Guys has seen many different crossovers, and with the newest one, Japan’s warrior is taking center stage.

This is not the only area in which Ghost of Tsushima is expanding, as a movie adaptation based on the samurai game is reportedly already in the works, bringing Jin and his samurai adventures in Feudal Japan onto the silver screen. Sony confirmed in March 2021 that a movie based on Sucker Punch’s game would be released in the future, although no release date has been set yet. While most details on the new feature are still unknown, it has been confirmed that John Wick director Chad Stahelski will be directing the movie adaptation.

Japan’s warriors leaving their mark in the gaming world

Ghost of Tsushima is a prime example of how samurai have found their place in the world of video games, with players eager to take the role of the fearless warriors. Sucker Punch’s title is not the first one to bring the samurai action onto our screens. Besides Ghost of Tsushima, Ubisoft’s For Honor is certainly one of the most beloved samurai games out there that has been praised for its samurai combat simulation based on Japan’s heroes of the past. Mobile gamers can experience Ancient Japan and their mightiest warriors and fighters in a unique ink-and-wash graphic in Ronin: The Last Samurai while fighting various enemies such as ninjas and Japanese gladiators. Samurai have even made it into the realm of classic casino games. The reputable slot game developer Pragmatic Play has created a great variety of HTML5 games, drawing inspiration from all sorts of topics and eras to excite every type of player. With the online slot Rise of Samurai Megaways, which can be played for free online, the Japanese warrior has found his way onto the reels. Samurai evidently continue to strike a chord with all sorts of players around the world.

Sucker Punch’s Ghost of Tsushima is a global success and brings Feudal Japan onto the screens of players around the world. With a new expansion, crossover, and a planned movie adaptation, the samurai action continues to expand.
