Iligan City – In a meaningful celebration of International Human Rights Day, Iligan City Jail-Male Dormitory took significant steps to bring human rights awareness and support directly into the hands of Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDL). Through a series of educational and legal activities, the facility emphasized the empowerment and protection of the PDL’s rights.
On December 10, 2024, at 9 AM, JO2 Aljay V Dahan, Development Officer, facilitated an insightful info-drive at the UWD Activity Area, engaging PDL in a comprehensive discussion on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Assisted by law students from the Sarimanok Law Clinic of the MSU College of Law-Iligan Extension, JO1 Dahan ensured that the PDL were well-informed about their fundamental rights, thus placing this vital knowledge directly into their hands.
Simultaneously, an impactful free legal clinic was conducted by lawyers and law students from the Sarimanok Law Clinic, guided by Atty. Joanah A. Disocor, Assistant Dean of the MSU College of Law-Iligan Extension. This clinic catered to 44 of the most vulnerable PDL, providing essential legal advice and support. The legal clinic was followed by a heartfelt gift-giving activity, further uplifting the spirits of the PDL and demonstrating a compassionate approach to their well-being.
These activities are part of Iligan City Jail-Male Dormitory’s dedicated efforts to commemorate Human Rights Consciousness Week, transforming the concept of human rights from abstract ideals into tangible, accessible resources for the PDL. The facility’s proactive approach highlights a commitment to not only uphold but also actively promote and educate on human rights within the correctional environment.
By bringing human rights education and legal support directly to the PDL, Iligan City Jail-Male Dormitory has reinforced the importance of dignity, justice, and empowerment. These initiatives underscore the facility’s role in fostering a humane and supportive atmosphere, ensuring that every PDL is aware of and can exercise their rights.
