Iligan City — The Iligan City Jail-Male Dormitory has embraced ‘Buwan ng Wika’ 2024 with a vibrant array of activities that not only celebrate the national language but also foster unity and cultural pride among its community. This year’s observance has been marked by an impressive lineup of events that blend tradition with creativity, showcasing the deep cultural roots of the Philippines.
A Month of Cultural Immersion
Over the past few weeks, the Male Dormitory has been abuzz with activities designed to engage both personnel and persons deprived of liberty (PDL) in the rich tapestry of Filipino culture. The celebration kicked off with Tagisan ng Talino, a quiz bee that tested participants on Filipino literature, history, and culture. This intellectual challenge served as a platform for participants to demonstrate their knowledge and appreciation of the national heritage.

The spotlight also shone on Pag-awit ng Kundiman, where traditional Filipino folk songs were performed. This event allowed participants to delve into the soulful melodies and historical significance of Kundiman, a genre deeply embedded in Filipino cultural identity. Following this, Pagbigkas ng Tula provided an opportunity for PDL and personnel alike to recite and reflect on poetry, further emphasizing the importance of literature and artistic expression in Filipino culture.
Traditional games were another highlight of the celebration. Larong Pinoy featured classic Filipino games such as hilahang lubid (tug-of-war) and luksong tinik (a jumping game), which not only entertained but also reinforced the communal spirit and physical camaraderie among the participants.

In addition to these activities, a basketball tournament was held, underscoring the sport’s role in Filipino culture and its connection to national identity. The tournament celebrated basketball as a beloved pastime and a symbol of Filipino resilience and unity.
A Dance Production That Captivated the Community
The month-long celebration reached a high point with a spectacular dance production[1] performed by the PDL and personnel, set to the lively tune of “Man from Manila” by Francis M. The performance was a remarkable display of both artistic talent and cultural pride, showcasing a blend of traditional Filipino dance and modern choreography. The dance production, which was also shared online, garnered attention and praise from various quarters, reflecting the depth of creativity and unity within the community.
This dance production was not just a form of entertainment; it was a poignant celebration of Filipino culture and identity. The choice of “Man from Manila,” a song known for its celebration of Filipino heritage and its vibrant beat, perfectly captured the spirit of the occasion. The performance brought together personnel and PDL in a shared expression of cultural pride, highlighting the transformative power of the arts in fostering unity and camaraderie.
Culmination and Collaboration
The month-long celebration will reach its zenith with the Search for Lakan and Lakambini ng Wika[2] on August 30, 2024. This event, held in collaboration with the Iligan City Jail-Female Dormitory, promises to be a grand finale, with personnel and PDL donning Filipiniana, Barong, or ethnic attire. The pageant will honor individuals who exemplify the spirit of the national language and Filipino culture, reinforcing the theme of unity amidst diversity.
A Message of Unity
Jail Warden JCI CARLO F OPBRIQUE emphasized the significance of the celebrations: “This celebration is more than just an observance of our national language; it is a testament to our shared heritage and the power of unity within our community. By engaging in these activities, we not only honor our culture but also strengthen the bonds that bring us together.”
Through these events, the Iligan City Jail-Male Dormitory has not only commemorated ‘Buwan ng Wika’ but has also demonstrated the enduring strength and unity of Filipino culture. The month-long activities have served as a reminder of the importance of cultural appreciation and the collective identity that binds the community together.
