Iligan City, Philippines — In celebration of Community Relations Services Month, the Iligan City Jail-Male Dormitory proudly launches Beyond Tattoos and Mistakes and Other Stories[1], an anthology that brings to life the stories of persons deprived of liberty (PDL), as written by personnel from the facility.

This landmark literary project features ten compelling narratives, offering readers a rare glimpse into the challenges, regrets, and aspirations of individuals seeking redemption. Through the powerful storytelling of jail personnel, Beyond Tattoos and Mistakes[2] challenges societal perceptions and highlights the resilience found behind bars.

JCINSP CARMELO A CORSAME, city jail warden and the publisher of the anthology, emphasized its role in rehabilitation and fostering understanding. “These stories reflect the complex journeys of individuals trying to change their lives,” he stated.

The editorial team, consisting of personnel from the Iligan City Jail-Male Dormitory, carefully crafted and curated each story to preserve authenticity and impact. Among the featured works, Beyond Tattoos and Mistakes tells of a PDL’s transformation through music, while The Choreography of Redemption showcases how dance became a path to healing within the facility.

Accompanying the narratives are artworks by PDL Ariel Doctora Pepito, offering a visual representation of the emotions captured in the anthology.

JO1 Trisha Carmie B Abrogar, the project coordinator, expressed pride in the initiative, stating, “This collection is a witness to the power of rehabilitation and the importance of seeing individuals beyond their past mistakes.”

By sharing these stories, the Iligan City Jail-Male Dormitory hopes to open conversations about second chances and the role of literature in reformation.

The launch of Beyond Tattoos and Mistakes underscores the facility’s commitment to changing lives and building a safer nation. Through storytelling and art, this project offers a window into the humanity that persists beyond detention walls.
