Jail DepEd, PS-DBM officials involved in Celeron laptop mess

Digital Pinoys

A network of digital advocates is pushing for jail time for Department of Education (DepEd) and Procurement Service – Department of Budget and Management (PS-DBM) officials involved in the Celeron laptop deal.

Digital Pinoys national campaigner Ronald Gustilo said that cases should be filed as soon as possible and no official should be spared from jail time.

“These officials from DepEd and PS-DBM have committed a very heavy crime against the teachers and students. The pertrators deprived learning efficiency for our nation’s future generation and they must be held accountable for it.”

Gustilo also said that prior to the celeron laptop deal, DepEd procured laptops equipped with a much powerful i5 processor for a lesser price of P32,000 per unit also with PS-DBM. The celeron laptop costed P58,300 per unit.

“The involved officials cannot claim that they do not know there are available units for a lesser price because DepEd and PS-DBM had a transaction prior to the overpriced deal. It is appalling that after purchasing laptops with a much better processor for a lesser price, they purchased entry-level laptops at a higher amount.”

Gustilo added that this should serve as a warning for other government officials thinking of enriching themselves using public funds.

“Government officials who are tempted to enrich themselves using public funds should think twice. It is the public’s outcry over this issue that caused government institutions to do something about this. People are watching you so you better not engage in illegal activities.”
