JBC sets public interview for vacant SC position

THE Judicial and Bar Council (JBC) announced over the weekend the holding of a public interview for the position associate justice of the Supreme Court

following the early retirement of associate justice Priscilla Baltazar-Padilla.

The JBC, which screens applicants to the judiciary and Office of the Ombudsman, said the interview shall be held online via Zoom application on January 6, 2021.

Those who will be interviewed are former Ateneo de Manila law dean Sedfrey Candelaria, Sandiganbayan Associate Justice Amparo Cabotaje-Tang, and Court of Appeals Associate Justice Japar Dimaampao.

The following are also candidates for the same position but whose previous interviews are still valid:

CA Justices Nina Antonio-Valenzuela, Maria Filomena Singh, Ramon Cruz, Jhoseph Lopez, Eduardo Peralta, and Apolinario Bruselas.

Sandiganbayan Associate Justice Oscar Herrera Jr. and Court Administrator Jose Midas Marquez.

Last November 3, the high court accepted the application for early retirement filed by Baltazar-Padilla due to health reasons.

Prior to her appointment to the SC, Padilla served as associate justice of the CA for 14 years.

She joined the judiciary in 1996 as presiding judge of Metropolitan Trial Court Branch 29, Manila and was promoted as presiding judge of Regional Trial Court Branch 38, Manila in 2000.

She obtained her law degree from the Lyceum of the Philippines, graduating magna cum laude. She placed fifth in the 1984 Bar Examinations.

Born on July 2, 1958, she will mandatorily retire on her 70th birthday in 2028
