Journey of discovery — Ramirez

hall of fame

A JOURNEY of discovery.

This is how Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) Chairman William “Butch” Ramirez described the selection process for all 10 new members in this year’s Philippine Sports Hall of Fame.

The 10 inductees — nine athletes and one coach — were carefully selected based on their achievements and contributions to Philippine sports.

It was a journey of discovery. It is very enriching for me to be a part of this search. I am pleased with the choices of both the selection and review committees,” said Ramirez after announcing the names of the fourth batch of awardees who will be enshrined in the PSHOF.

They will also receive P200,000 as part of the Republic Act 8757 signed by President Estrada on Nov. 25, 1999.

The 10 new honorees are:

Paulino Alcantara (football), Eric Buhain (swimming), Dionisio Calvo (coach, basketball), Arianne Cerdeña (bowling), Robert Jaworski (basketball), Gertrudes Lozada (swimming), Elma Muros (athletics), Rogelio Onofre (athletics), Leopoldo Serrantes (boxing) and Roel Velasco (boxing).

Of the 10 new inductees, only one was a coach — Calvo.

A two-time Olympian, Calvo is best remembered for leading the Philippine team which finished fifth in the Berlin Olympics in 1936.

Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) president and PSHOF co-chairman Rep. Abraham “Bambol” Tolentino also lauded the selection.

I definitely appreciate the work of the committee for this recognition of our sports heroes, which is an inspiration to all,” said Tolentino.

It’s been a pleasure. Na-apreciate ko ang review committee, malaking tulong. Salamat sa inyong recommendation. I am glad that a new batch of people who fought for the country and sacrificed a lot will be given recognition to inspire the new generation of sports heroes,” said Games and Amusement Board (GAB) chairman Abraham “Baham” Mitra.

The review committee was composed of Ed Andaya (People’s Tonight), Joe Antonio (People’s Journal), Rey Bancod (Tempo), Dodo Catacutan (Spin.ph), Quinito Henson (Philippine Star), Jun Lomibao (Business Mirror),Tito Talao (Manila Bulletin) and Tessa Jazmines (University of the Philippines).

The date and place of the enshrinement ceremony will be announced soon by the PSC.
