Kagawad Dodges 3 Bullets

A 55-YEAR-OLD barangay councilor participating in the government’s war against illegal drugs called Oplan Tokhang cheated death after one of two motorcycle-riding gunmen missed after firing three shots at him Thursday morning in San Leonardo, San Ecija.

Police chief Major Lawrence Lira identified the lucky barangay kagawad as Jerry Lopez, of Bgy. Magpapalayok, San Leonardo.

The gun attack occurred at 10:20 a.m. while Lopez was driving a Kawasaki Bajaj tricycle on his way home with his wife Yolanda and 26-year-old daughter Mildred. His family was also unhurt.

The Lopez family had already reached Purok 7, Bgy. Tambo-Adorable when the two unidentified suspects on board a Kawasaki Bajaj motorcycle overtook their tricycle and its back rider fired at the barangay kagawad thrice.

However, SSgt. Norwin Cunanan, police prober, said the suspect missed the target and hit a nearby concrete wall instead.

“Kinabig po kasi agad ni kagawad paiwas ang motor niya nang mapansin niya na bumunot ng baril ang backride sabay takbo ng matulin patakas papunta ng Sta. Rosa,” Cunanan told this reporter Friday.

“Aktibo sa barangay si kagawad kontra sa kriminalidad at sa kampanya kontra droga lalo na dito sa Tokhang,” added Cunanan, when asked about any possible angles that could be linked to the official’s failed slay attempt.

He said they are now conducting follow-up operations by checking on CCTV camera footages near the area and interviewing witnesses for possible arrest and identification of the suspects.
Probers found a live bullet for cal.45 at the crime scene.
