Korean Air Plane Overshoots Runway; Thousands Affected

KAL Overshoots Runway

Thousands of passengers at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport terminals bound for Cebu on Monday were affected after Korean Airlines flight 631 from Incheon international airport overshot the runway upon landing at the Mactan Cebu International Airport late Sunday night (October 23, 2022).

Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines [CAAP] spokesperson Eric Apolonio said KAL airbus fight KE 631 carrying 162 passengers and 11 crew members which departed from Incheon international airport overshot at the muddy portion of runway 22 upon landing at 11:11 p.m. due to bad weather.

All flights bound for Cebu were diverted to Iloilo International Airport while all flights from Cebu were cancelled after the runway closed for traffic due to the incident.

Apolonio said CAAP Aircraft Accident Investigation Inquiry Board (AAIIB) Officeri-in-Charge Reineer Y. Baculinao dispatched his team to Cebu to conduct an investigation on the nature of the incident.

Affected flights due to the Mactan Runway Closure are PAL flight PR 1869 Manila-Mactan which returned to Manila and landed at 12:14am; APG9047 Incheon-Mactan (diverted to Manila, landed at 12:18am; JNA025 Manila-Mactan (took off Manila then diverted to Clark Airport, landed at 12:32am; RPC-7290 Clark-Mactan(diverted to Manila, landed at 12:57am)

The runway at Mactan Cebu International Airport remained closed due to a disabled aircraft of Korean Airlines that is obstructing the runway.. Flights are unable to take off and land until clearing operations are completed.

PAL spokesperson Cielo Villaluna said affected passengers will be accommodated on the next available flights out of Manila and Cebu, subject to space availability.

CEB spokesperson Carmina Romero said “we urge passengers travelling to and from Cebu on October 24, 2022 to only proceed to the airport if they have confirmed flights. For those who wish to voluntarily postpone their flights, they may avail of Cebu Pacific’s flexible options which include free rebooking and travel fund.”
