Korean found dead inside detention cell

A 52-year-old Korean national was found lifeless inside his cell while detained at the Bureau of Immigration (BI) Warden Facility (BIWF) in Bicutan, Taguig.

The Korean, identified as Son Byeongkweon was found dead on the morning of January 4.

BI records showed that Son was committed to the facility last December 29, 2020, after being intercepted at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport. He was considered a fugitive from justice, as per Interpol records, with a warrant of arrest in Korea for fraud.

When the incident was discovered, BIWF nurses on-duty immediately assessed the situation and found him to have been deceased already.

The matter was reported to the Philippine National Police (PNP) Scene of the Crime Operatives who are now conducting an investigation into the incident.

Pending the result of the PNP investigation, the BI has coordinated with the Korean Embassy regarding the incident for the necessary preparations for the victim’s remains.
