KPPP seeks clarification on claims of Chinese workers in PH

A FILIPINO transparency watchdog has asked the Chinese Embassy in the Philippines to clarify reports that Chinese nationals are being sent to the country to work as laborers in government projects.

The Kilos Pinoy Para sa Pagbabago (KPPP) sent a letter dated Oct. 20 to Chinese Ambassador Huang Xilian asking him to clarify the issue.

In the spirit of cooperation and a desire for greater understanding, the organization Kilos Pinoy Para sa Pagbabago (KPPP) would like to voice our apprehension and concern with regards to the issue,” said group Convenor William Espinosa.

During Senate hearings, it was claimed that “Chinese nationals make up 45 percent of the Department of Public Works and Highways’ (DPWH) Binondo-Intramuros Bridge Project. For the Estrella-Pantaleon project, 31 percent of the workers are made up of Chinese nationals.”

KPPP said while the Philippine government’s massive construction program is aimed at generating employment, these jobs are not going to Filipino workers.

As an independent watchdog and think-thank, KPPP would like to call on your honorable office to respond to these allegations and assure both countries that their relations remain above board, fair, and equitable,” the group said.

KPPP told the ambassador that “China has long trumpeted the improved relations between itself and the Philippines. It is no doubt thanks to the tireless work the good ambassador has been doing to improve on and iron out any misunderstandings between our two countries. We are confident that your office will heed this call and maintain good relations between our two countries.”
