IN another move aimed at providing utmost protection to the residents of Baseco, Mayor Honey Lacuna, in partnership with fifth district Congressman Irwin Tieng, inaugurated a seawall and lighted up the populous area of Baseco and also Malate.
In doing so, both Lacuna and Tieng profusely thanked President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr. and House Speaker Martin Romualdez whom they said have always been there to support all the projects that are meant to help the people of Manila.
They expressed gratitude to the President and Romualdez as they formally inaugurated a new seawall, installed concrete bored piles and solar-powered street lights in Baseco, with Lacuna saying: “Hindi ito basta lighting lamang dahil nilagyan din natin ng seawall para hindi kainin ng dagat ‘yung lupa.”
“Isang makasaysayang araw ang ating pinagsasaluhan sa pormal na pagpapasinaya ng mga proyektong tunay na magdudulot ng seguridad, liwanag, at katatagan sa ating komunidad dito sa Baseco Compound,” Lacuna said, adding that the effort to light up the streets of Manila is part of the city’s commitment to maintaining peace and order to the fullest.
Lacuna also commended and thanked Tieng for always actively supporting her administration and programs, noting that meaningful projects that redound to the benefit of Manilans are made possible through local and national partnerships through his effort.

According to Lacuna, Tieng was also instrumental in the rehabilitation of the San Andres Complex and the Lagusnilad, among others which, just like the lighting projects in Baseco and Malate, also form part of efforts to provide security and safety, particularly for those traversing the city streets at night.
For his part, Tieng expressed continued commitment to Lacuna and cited the constant support of President Marcos, Jr. and Speaker Romualdez, as he also cited the help of DPWH District Engineer Bryan Briones for his projects.
Lacuna said the projects they inaugurated are solid proof that there is no need for the local government to incur huge debts to get things done, saying tapping the support of allies in Congress whom she also treat as family has proven to be effective enough.
“Ang mga proyektong ito ay patunay ng ating pagkakaisa at pagtutulungan upang mas mapabuti ang buhay ng bawat mamamayan,” the mayor said.
After Baseco, Lacuna and Tieng, along with Vice Mayor Yul Servo and fifth district Councilors Charry Ortega and Boy Isip, also led the inauguration and blessing of the new, solar-powered street lights along San Marcelino Street from Pedro Gil to Quirino Avenue in Malate.
The said projects are significant steps toward a brighter and safer community, noting that darkness never fails to be an ally of criminal elements, the mayor stressed.
Meanwhile, Tieng said Baseco is a reclaimed area vulnerable to water encroachment and the seawall project they inaugurated is meant to safeguard its inhabitants, while the lighting enhances visibility and safety for Baseco residents.
