Landslide hits Surigao del Sur village, woman missing

BUTUAN CITY – A woman was reported missing when a landslide hit a village in Tandag City in Surigao del Sur Monday evening.

Col. James Goforth, Surigao del Sur Police Provincial Office director, identified the missing person as Marly Visaya Cabrera, a resident of Purok Bamboo, Barangay Maitum in Tandag City.

Based on the report from Tandag City Police Office, the victim, together with his husband identified as Alger Espinoza Cabrera were on their way home from Tandag City when accidentally hit by the landslide,” Goforth said.

Alger was rescued by his brother and neighbors and brought to the Adela Serra Ty Memorial Medical Center.

As of Tuesday morning, Goforth said the rescue operation is still ongoing in the area.

The landslide was triggered by heavy rains that hit Surigao del Sur and other parts of the Caraga Region since Monday due to the intertropical convergence zone.

Advisories have been issued since Monday alerting residents for possible flooding and landslides due to intermittent rains. Philippine News Agency
