NATIONAL Capital Region Police Office director, Major General Debold M. Sinas yesterday commended the Las Piñas City Police Station headed by Colonel Rodel A. Pastor for peacefully resolving a hostage-taking situation without firing a single shot on Thursday morning.
“Let us learn from this experience and ensure that as much as possible, we should be always prepared to address any similar incident without any bloodshed,” said the Metro Manila police chief as he lauded the Las Piñas City police for rescuing a 4-year old boy seized by a relative who is said to be suffering from a mental disorder.
Sinas ordered Pastor to subject the suspect identified as Joel Neri to a complete medical, psychiatric and drug examination to determine if he should be committed to a police lock-up facility or turned over to a mental facility.
The official also instructed the Las Piñas police to see to it that the boy and his relatives will undergo psychological counseling and stress debriefing in the aftermath of the traumatic experience they suffered when Neri grabbed the victim and threatened to kill him with a kitchen knife.
An investigation showed the suspect, armed with a chopping and a kitchen knife, seized the young boy inside their residence on Block 2, Lot 11, San Antonio Street, Metrocore, Pasong Cobra in Bgy. Talon 5 at around 6:30 a.m. Thursday.
After being informed of the incident, Pastor and his men rushed to the site and negotiated for the peaceful surrender of the hostage-taker. Members of the Las Piñas CPS Sub-Station 4 and the local SWAT surrounded the area and kept kibitzers from coming near the scene.
Pastor said that during their talk with the suspect, the latter demanded to see a certain ‘Belen’ and a television coverage. After around three hours of negotiations, the official and his men saw the opportunity to subdue the hostage-taker and rescue the young boy unharmed.
Recovered from the possession of the suspect were the two bladed weapons.
“We found out that the suspect has a history of mental disorder and depression,” said the official.Publication Source : People's Tonight
