LGBTQ should have equal rights – Roque

UniTeam senatorial candidate Harry Roque vows to fight for the equal rights of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) community, including the right to choose their partners regardless of gender.

Roque, a human rights lawyer, said that any person should have the right to choose who to love.

“Ang personal na paninindigan ko dyan, kung sino ang pipiliin mo para maging asawa mo ay desisyong personal na kahit sino lalung lalo na ang estado, hindi dapat manghimasok,” Roque told the LGBTQ community during the ‘Sara for Barangays’ event on Thursday.

“Kailangang maprotektahan ang karapatan ng lahat na pumili kung sino ang kanilang mamahalin at sino ang gusto nilang makasama sa kanilang buong buhay,” he added.

He would also push for recognition of same-sex partnerships as he believes that same-sex marriage would not be accepted in the country.

“It is not a matter of are you pro or against same-sex marriage kasi hindi talaga lulusot sa Pilipinas,” he noted.

On January 6, 2020, the Supreme Court announced it had dismissed a motion to reconsider its September 2019 ruling denying a petition to approve same-sex marriage.

“Ngayon po ang dapat maisulong natin ‘yung pagkilala sa mga nagrerelasyon, yung ilang karapatan na bininbigay natin sa mga nagmamahalan,” he said.

Roque also recalled when he stood up for his classmate who was being bullied for being feminine.

“Since then, I knew that I had it in me to stand up for those na mga inaapi… I’m proud to say that for the very first time, I stood my ground and said no to bullying,” Roque said.
