FORMER Manila Mayor Alfredo S. Lim was laid to rest at the Manila North Cemetery yesterday, August 29, Saturday.
Before the interment, a mass attended by family, friends and supporters, was held for Lim at the Sto. Nino Church in Tondo at noon.
From the Arlington Memorial Chapels where his remains were held in wake, the convoy passed by the Senate where he served from 2004 to 2007 and was received by Senate President Tito Sotto; Legaspi Towers where he lived; Emerald Restaurant which was his favourite hangout; the Manila Police District (MPD) where he served for 38 years and rose from the ranks until he became its chief when it was known then as the Western Police District; the Manila City Hall where he served as mayor for four terms, 1992to 1998 and from 2007 to 2013 the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) where he served as its director from 1989-1992 and where his daughter received a Philippine flag; his ancestral home on Mabagos Street and then straight to the Sto. Nino Church in Tondo where a mass was said for him at 12 noon.
From the church, Lim’s supporters walked all the way to the Manila North Cemetery. Lim’s urn was mounted on a horse-drawn carriage escorted by policemen from the NCRPO, fire volunteers, supporters and groups of motorcycle riders.’ Lim was also Secretary of the Interior and Local Government from 2000 to 2001.
The convoy arrived at the Manila North Cemetery at around 3 p.m., where Lim was honoured with a 21-gun salute as his urn was laid to rest in his mausoleum. Lim passed away at the age of 90.
Meanwhile, Sotto waved his final goodbye to Lim as the funeral hearse bearing his urn passed the Senate Compound before it crosses again the streets of Manila before going to the Manila North Cemetery for inurnment.
The Senate has adopted a resolution honoring and recognizing the contribution of Lim in his 60 years as a public servant.
Senate Resolution No. 494 primarily expresses the Senate’s “profound sympathy and sincere condolences of the Senate on the death of the Honorable Alfredo ‘Fred’ S. Lim,” former senator, former mayor of Manila, former director of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) and former secretary of the Department of Interior and Local Government.”
Sotto along with Senators Panfilo Lacson and Francis Tolentino hailed Lim for serving the Filipino people “with utmost dedication, honor and dignity” for over six decades in various capacities.
The resolution also cited Lim’s stint as a senator from 2004 to 2007, saying he introduced bills “that would address the concerns of the people, particularly the poor, and the country such as giving free medicines, and medical care to indigent patients, protecting the families and relatives of the deceased from harassments of hospitals and funeral parlors, among others.”
“The untimely demise of a true public servant, who had dedicated almost his entire life in serving his countrymen and whose principles and achievements in life are worth emulating but hard to duplicate, is a great loss not only to the bereaved family but to the nation as well,” the resolution further stated.
