THE age-old phrase ‘love is in the air’ took on a literal meaning recently.
This was when a couple, both of whom are cabin crew, made history when they exchanged vows in what is now recorded to be the first wedding ever to be held onboard a commercial aircraft in the Philippines.
The newlywed — Kristoffer “Topy” Rustia and Micah Cura— said their “I dos” while aboard AirAsia flight Z2 225 bound for Caticlan.
Aside from their loved ones who were also on board, other passengers became instant witnesses as the couple literally took their relationship to greater heights—at 30,000 feet.
AirAsia spokesperson Steve Dailisan was just too thrilled in making the announcement, saying “ AirAsia is very happy to have been part of this historic union, the 1st wedding onboard a commercial aircraft in the Philippines, flying to one of the World’s best Islands, Boracay.”
“Indeed, love is in the air! Congratulations to our newlyweds! Dreaming big and making it happen—this is what AirAsia is all about. We hope that your story inspires people to never give up on spreading love,” he said.
It was learned that although Topy and Micah studied in the same university, their paths crossed only in 2018 during their initial cabin crew training in Malaysia.
While the world was shocked with the emergence of COVID-19 in December of 2019, the same month, Topy and Micah welcomed their healthy baby girl with so much hope for the future.
”2020 was filled with uncertainties and challenges for everyone in the airline industry but we are always reminded of our love for each other, and a promise of a brighter future for our daughter,” said Kristoffer Rustia.
Last December 2020, Topy surprised Micah with a heartwarming proposal. As flight crew themselves, both had dreamt of getting married in flight.
When the couple shared their plans with AirAsia, their Allstar colleagues instantly worked together to make their dream come true.
“As crazy as it may seem, I envisioned Micah walking down the aisle in one of our flights wearing her lovely gown, not her cabin crew uniform. It seemed like it would be impossible, knowing that we work as flight attendants but AirAsia made it happen”, Topy added.
“Topy and I are grateful beyond words. It’s one thing to get married, it’s another to fulfill that dream in a place where we started our journey together — inside the aircraft. Our prayer is that we are able to inspire people to just hang on, and never lose hope because there are still many things to be thankful for, despite the many challenges brought by the pandemic, “ said Micah Cura.
AirAsia made the necessary preparations, security, and risk assessment to ensure that health and safety protocols were observed during the flight.
After tying the knot on board, the couple, together with their families enjoyed an early dinner reception with AirAsia’s five-star hotel partner, The Lind Boracay.
The couple, as of this writing, are already spending their honeymoon in one of Boracay’s cozy rooms and will get to enjoy the view of the island’s well known sunset by the beach.
