Controversial Congressman Atty. Joel Chua (Manila, third district), who had been incessantly attacked on social media and in rallies by no less than Vice President Sara Duterte and Mayor-elect Isko Moreno, got reelected for a second term, along with the entire team of Asenso Manileno candidates for Councilor in the same district.
Chua, along with the five Councilors who all ran under the same party, were proclaimed by the Manila City Board of Canvassers on the same day. These councilors are reelectionist- Councilors Fa Fugoso, Atty. Jong Isip and Maile Atienza, whose sister Chi ran under the opposing camp and had been proclaimed vice mayor-elect and first-time Councilors Karen Alibarbar and Jeff Lau, formerly president of the Manila Chinatown Barangay Organization.
The embattled Congressman fought a hotly-contested race, since he was running against the sister of the sitting vice mayor and was under constant attacks from Duterte and Moreno.
Chua expressed gratitude to the residents of the third district for their continued support, saying: “Buong puso po akong nagpapasalamat sa tiwala na inyong ipinagkaloob muli sa akin. Maraming salamat sa inyong suporta, panalangin, at paninindigan sa gitna ng hamon ng kampanya. Ito ay tagumpay nating lahat! Makakaasa po kayong hindi ko kayo bibiguin.”
Serving as Chairman of the House committee on good government and public accountability, Chua was also one of the House prosecutors for the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte.
“Sa aking pangalawang termino bilang inyong Kongresista, tayo po ay maglilingkod nang higit pa sa inaasahan — nang buong puso at buong tapang. Muli, ako po ang Abogado ng Distrito, Hatid ay Serbisyo,” he assures.
