Mayor Honey Lacuna has directed concerned units to arrange a ‘grand heroes’ welcome not just for one, but for two Manila residents who made it big in the 2024 Paris Olympics, to be marked by a ticker-tape parade and awarding of, among others, cash incentives for double gold medalist Carlos Edriel Yulo of Malate and Ernest ‘EJ’ Obiena of Tondo.
Lacuna also said that a coordination will be duly made with public and private schools in the city so that the students may be allowed to witness the parade of Yulo and Obiena and see them upclose.
The two, according to Lacuna, are now public figures that the students may look up to for inspiration and the heroes’ welcome will be the city’s manifestation of support, to honor their unique talents, dedication and outstanding contribution to Philippine sports.
“Caloy and EJ exemplify what our youth can achieve through dedication, discipline, and community support. Their victories and unwavering spirit will always be a source of pride for the City of Manila,” the lady mayor stressed.
Lacuna said the city of Manila is truly proud and honored to have two athletes hailing from Manila excel in the 2024 Paris Olympics.
It was learned that P2 million will be awarded to Yulo or P1,000,000 for each of the gold medal he had won in the floor exercise and vault events while Obiena, who clinched the fourth place in the pole vault finals, will be receiving P500,000.
Yulo, a resident of Leveriza in Malate, went to Aurora A. Quezon Elementary School and went to college at the Adamson University. He also became the city’s representative in the Palarong Pambansa several times.
Obiena, on the other hand, went to Chiang Kai Shek College and was a star of the UST-Manila in the UAAP.
