Mayor Honey Lacuna is urging Manilans to donate blood, but only if their condition allows.

Lacuna made the appeal as she stressed how hard it is to look for blood for patients in need of it.

In making the appeal, Lacuna urged those who wish to help others through their blood donation to go to the Sta. Ana Hospital which is under the directorship of Dr. Grace Padilla.

“Alam natin kung gaano kahirap maghanap ng dugo para sa mga pasyente, kaya’t hihikayatin din natin ang ating mga kapwa Manilenyo na may kakayahang magbigay ng kanilang dugo na dito na sa Sta. Ana Hospital magpunta,” the lady mayor stated.

She added: “Hindi naman natin kailangang hintayin na tayo o ang mahal sa buhay natin ang mangailangan bago tayo makaisip ng pagdo-donate ng dugo. Bagkus, gawin natin itong daan sa pagkakawang-gawa.”

A couple of days ago, Lacuna signed a Deed of Donation with the Jaime Ongpin Foundation which sponsored the Sta. Ana Hospital’s Blood Bank.

The purpose of the Blood Bank, she said, is to store and always have available blood which can be used primarily for patients who need blood after undergoing operation.

Padilla said the Hospital Blood bank facility is a vital component of a tertiary hospital service, as it aims to be self-reliant with its blood and blood products. This aims to ensure compliance. with standards by adopting the principle of voluntary blood donation. SAH Blood bank aims to ensure that these ethical principles are taken on, with its operations towards acquiring, a steady blood and blood products supply.

“Such will be the City of Manila and Sta Ana Hospital’s response, to cases like medical cases that include excessive blood loss seen Dengue, trauma, postpartum hemorrhages, blood disorders like anemias, and leukemia, thalassemia) and even plasma disorders (Hemophilia and other clotting factors deficiencies) and Major Surgical Operation where blood and blood products are very much needed,” Padilla added.
