“MAKE everyday a special day for grandparents and the elderly. Give our lolo and lola a hug.”
This appeal was made by Mayor Honey Lacuna to the public as the nation observed over the weekend the ‘World Day of Grandparents and the Elderly.’
In a short message, Lacuna cited that Manila is where it is now through the efforts of its senior citizen-residents who have given the best years of their lives contributing to the city’s progress.
“Pundasyon ng Maynila ang sipag at sakripisyong inalay ng ating mga nakatatandang Manileño noong kanilang kalakasan. Sila ang dahilan ng anumang tinatamasa natin ngayon. Kaya ngayong araw nila, ako at ang Pamahalaan ng Maynila ay lubos silang pinasasalamatan. Mabuhay ang ating mga lolo’t lola! Happy Grandparents Day po sa inyong lahat!” Lacuna said in her social post over the weekend.
In another development, Lacuna went around several schools in Manila to observe the flow of classes on the first day of school yesterday.
Accompanied by Vice Mayor Yul Servo, the mayor distributed bags and notebooks and called on the students to study hard for a better future.
Among the schools she visited are the Rosauro Almario Elementary School, Dr. Alejandro Albert Elementary School and Quirino High School.
Lacuna appealed to the students to take care of their school and its facilities and treat their school like their own home.
“Dahi inyo din ito, marami pang dadaan sa eskuwelahan na ito at ang gusto sana namin, kung paano n’yo ito dinatnan ngayon ay gayun din nila makkita sa susunod na mga taon,” she said.
“Iwasan nating sulatan ang dingdging at ang mga comfort room. Isipin nyo na ito ang inyong pangalawang tdahanan… kung paano n’yo sinisinop at inaalagaan ang inyon mga bahay, dapat ganun din dito dahil halos kalahati ng araw ay nandito kayo,” Lacuna stressed.
Lacuna urged the students to listen to their teachers and make their parents proud by finishing their studies.
The city government, she assures, will be there to aid them with their needs the best way it can and that the only thing she asks of the students is for them to finish education, since it is the surest way to a much better life.
