MANILA Mayor Honey Lacuna said that her being a woman is proving to be more of an advantage rather than a disadvantage as the city’s top executive, adding that her only biggest challenge so far is getting out of being branded as a ‘shadow’ or puppet of her predecessor, now citizen Isko Moreno, whom she said was a very good mentor to her when they were working together.

Speaking at the “Balitaan sa Harbor View” forum hosted by the Manila City Hall Reporters’ Association (MAHCRA), the lady mayor said that her first 100 days in office including the transition from the past to the present administration did not pose any difficulty since she had been a very active part of the administration of then Mayor Isko Moreno, where she served as the vice mayor and Presiding Officer of the Manila City Council.

“Siguro hindi naman kaila sa inyo na true to the essence ay naging partner ako ni Mayor Isko, hindi lang introduction sa programs and policies kundi bahagi talagda ako, so di na naging mahirap sa akin ang transition and very fortunate ako na nung malapit na iwan ni Mayor Isko ang lungsod at maging private citizen, marami siyang itinagubilin,” Lacuna said.

“Very challenging for me is ‘yung makawala sa shadow ni Mayor Isko at matanggal ang pagkakakilala bilang sunud-sunuran lang.

Lacuna said that in the coming months, the citizens of Manila will already feel all the more the difference between the past and present administration.

Lacuna went on to enthuse that being a woman is proving to be more of an advantage rather than a disadvantage for her, since women are known to be more meticulous and nurturing.

Tingin ko, mas open mga tao na kumunsulta at lumapit kasi pag lalaki, mas andap sila,” said Lacuna, who is also a doctor.

This observation, she said, is based on the reactions of the residents each time she and her team conduct their regular “Kalinga sa Maynila” forum which goes around barangays where residents are able to air their suggestions, complaints and questions and directly to the mayor herself.
