MANILA Mayor Honey Lacuna ordered a thorough investigation into the blast and fire incident that injured a number of people, including some students from the Dela Salle University in Malate, Manila.

Lacuna also directed permits bureau chief Levi Facundo to check on the business permit issued by the city of Manila to the laundry shop where the blast and subsequent fire reportedly started.

The mayor said she is not discounting the possibility that there may have been violations on the regulations set for the operation of the said business establishment.

Manila Police District Director PBGen. Andre Dizon, who was immediately present at the scene, reported to the mayor that the cause of the incident was initially traced to a gas leak that resulted in a positive blast.

The incident happened at around 7:20 p.m. of January 30, 2023 at the 360 Wash Laundry Shop located at the MAC TORRE Residence along No. 2223 F Reyes cor. Noli Streets in Barangay 708, Malate, Manila. The building where the shop is located is reportedly owned by one Macario Torre.

Apart from Dizon, the MPD responding team that rushed to the scene is composed of Malate Police Station personnel led by Station Commnder PLTCol. Salvador Tangdol.

About ten fire trucks were said to have responded to the scene and a probe is now being done by fire investigator SFO4 Idelberto Cruz.

The fire was put under control at 7:29 p.m. while the ‘fire out’ was declared at 7:34 p.m.

The total number of casualties are yet to be determined while the cause of fire remains unknown, along with the estimated damage to property.
