Movies to Keep Tabs on in 2023

Movie Viewing

To put it gently, the past two years have been unique. Hollywood and most other businesses have been forced to make several important modifications. Other studios combined theatrical and internet tactics while streaming all of their significant 2021 films instantly on different platforms, with varied outcomes. Going into 2023, that’s probably not going to change, but that doesn’t mean we won’t be treated to some amazing movies. Pinoy audiences generally enjoy a wide range of foreign films, but there are a few genres and themes that tend to be more popular. Here are some of the most popular films anticipated for 2023:

Hollywood Blockbuster

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania

An up and coming American superhero movie based on Ant-Man and the Wasp from Marvel Comics. The movie is the sequel to the previous movie, “Ant-Man” (2015) and “Ant-Man and the Wasp” (2018), and the 28th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Kevin Feige is the producer, and Peyton Reed is the director.

The movie stars Paul Rudd as Scott Lang as Ant-Man, Evangeline Lilly as Hope van Dyne, also known as The Wasp, Michael Douglas as Hank Pym, and Michelle Pfeiffer as Janet van Dyne. Joining the cast are Kathryn Newton as Cassie Lang, aka Stature, and Jonathan Majors as Kang the Conqueror.

The film’s plot has been kept under wraps, but it is expected to continue the story of Scott Lang and Hope van Dyne as they go on a new adventure in the Quantum Realm. The movie is also expected to introduce the villain Kang the Conqueror, a major antagonist in Marvel Comics, and also appeared in previous Marvel movies such as “Loki” and “Doctor Strange: Multiverse of Madness.”

Bela Luna

In a world where strength and sexiness collide, Angeli Khang shines in her dual role as two distinct and captivating women in the upcoming film “Bela Luna.”

In this highly anticipated movie, Khang embodies the characters of Bella and Luna, two women with vastly different personalities yet equally powerful in their own ways.

Bela, the first character Khang portrays, is a strong urban woman who resides with her partner Arnold. They are collaborating on a unique project that will soon put their relationship in harm’s way.

Luna, on the other hand, a teacher in her 20s, is abused by Abe, who is roughly twice as old as she is. Luna aspires for the day she can finally leave her husband since he frequently beats her and forces her to engage in sexual activity, making her an enigma that viewers will be eager to unravel.

As the film delves deeper into the characters’ lives and their intertwining stories, audiences will be taken on a thrilling and captivating journey that explores themes of power, desire, and redemption.

A film by McArthur Alejandre, “Bela Luna” promises to be a cinematic experience that is both visually stunning and emotionally compelling. With Angeli Khang’s powerhouse performances and a talented cast and crew, this movie is one to watch out for this 2023.

European Art Films

The movie focuses on Carl Nargle, a veteran host of Vermont’s top painting show for almost thirty years. Carl’s unique hushed delivery style has captivated audiences across Pittsfield to St. Albans, leaving them spellbound with every brush stroke. However, the station decides to bring in a younger, more talented painter who takes away everything Carl holds dear, including his fans.

The film, compared to All About Eve, generated buzz with its cast featuring Michaela Watkins, Wendi McLendon-Covey, and Stephen Root, suggesting a low-key indie comedy. The release of the first look at Wilson’s character, which resembles a real-life cult figure, propelled the movie to the top of everyone’s must-see list.

Spiderman: Across the Spider-Verse

An upcoming animated superhero film that serves as a sequel to the 2018 film “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.” The movie is directed by Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers, and Justin K. Thompson and produced by Phil Lord and Chris Miller.

The film will continue the story of Miles Morales, who is now more experienced and confident as Spider-Man. He discovers a rift in the space-time continuum and crosses paths with Spider-People from different dimensions, including Gwen Stacy (Spider-Woman) and an older version of Peter Parker. Together, they must confront a new villain and once again save the multiverse.

The film features an impressive voice cast that includes Shameik Moore as Miles Morales, Hailee Steinfeld as Gwen Stacy, and Jake Johnson as Peter B. Parker, among others. The film also includes a posthumous appearance by Stan Lee, who co-created Spider-Man with Steve Ditko.

“Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” is set to be released in two parts, with the first part scheduled for release on October 7, 2022.

Magic Mike’s Last Dance

Mike’s Last Dance is a new movie from the popular Magic Mike franchise makers. This time, the focus is on Mike’s final performance as he prepares to retire from stripper life. The new teaser for the movie gives us a glimpse of what to expect from this highly anticipated sequel.

Mike Lane, a former male dancer who lost his furniture firm due to the COVID-19 pandemic, now resides in Miami and works as a bartender for a restaurant business. Mike is acknowledged by Kim, an attorney representing Maxandra “Max” Mendoza’s charity, during a fundraiser occasion she is hosting. Max asks her employee to get Mike to talk with her privately after the incident.

When Max is by himself, he claims that Kim informed her about his talent and inquires about the cost of a lap dance. When pressed on a price, Mike initially replies that he is retired but then offers $60,000. Max concurs, but they give in to their passion and have a sexual encounter while dancing. The following morning, Max promises to pay Mike $60,000 and take him to Europe for a month.

We have a ton of titles to look into as we approach the busiest year since 2020. Most of these will probably be released on schedule, but we’re especially eager for the Marvel Universe ones to be released sooner!
