HATS off to the Manila Police District (MPD) headed by its Director, Gen. Rolly Miranda and the MPD’s Theft and Robbery Section (TRS) under Maj. Joselito ‘Joey’ de Ocampo, for swiftly solving the robbery-snatching incident that victimized no less than Labor Seretary Silvestre Bello III Friday (November 6) last week.
Bello was reportedly stuck in traffic while using his high-end cellphone worth over P70,000. Since he could not get any signal, he rolled down the window of his Starex van. What happened next must have shocked him.
His cellphone got snatched by a teenaged boy who fled on foot and rejoined his waiting companions. Then altogether, they ran toward the direction of Quezon Boulevard in Quiapo and simply disappeared from Bello’s view.
Miranda wasted no time and directed MPD-TRS chief Maj. Joey de Ocampo to conduct a follow-up operation. De Ocampo, in turn, formed a team, composed of P/Master Sgt. Manuel Pimentel, P/S/Sgt.Margarito Dequito, P/Corporal Paul Robin Bautista, P/Cpl. Taduis Escano, P/Cpl. Serafin Galpo Jr. and P/Cpl. Paul Dick Valencia.
The Lawton Police Community Precinct under P/Captain Virgilio Platon also joined the follow-up operation which was conducted in Quiapo and Malabon City on Sunday.
The operation began with a visit to Elizondo Street in Quiapo at around 4:30 p.m. There, the group led by Pimentel nabbed two male suspects said to be 17 years of age.
It did not take much effort for these young suspects to offer the information on the identities and whereabouts of their cohorts — Marl Louise Calveeo, 18; Mariken Herbano Radores, 29, a saleslady and resident of Malabon City and a 15-year-old boy whose name was not disclosed owing to his being a minor and who was collared in Malabon City.
According to De Ocampo, Radores was the one who sold Bello’s cellphone to businessman Omar Marohom Sidic, 28, of R. Hidalgo Street in Quiapo, Manila. As expected, Radores denied knowing that the cellphone she sold to Sidic was stolen.
Sidic, according to the police, had been into the buy-and-sell business for some time. He admitted having sold the phone for P34,000.
Meanwhile, the 15-year-old suspect told probers that a certain ‘JD’ ordered him to snatch Bellos’cellphone, an Iphone Pro Max 11 worth over P70,000. JD, who is yet to be arrested, was said to have paid the youngsters P5,000 for the job.
A case for violation of the anti-fencing law was filed against Sidic, who had to return the money he took from the buyer -said to be P29,000- in order to get back the cellphone of Bello and return it to him.
The youngsters, I heard, will be subjected to evaluation by the social welfare department to determine their discernment capacity. In this day and age, there is reason to believe that these suspects knew very well that what they were doing was an infraction of the law.
With the very swift resolution of the case, arrest of the suspects and recovery of Sec. Bello’s phone, the MPD deserves a pat on the back.
